Description
Apollo 1: Eight Original NASA Glossy Photos of the AS-204 Fire from the Collection of a NASA Photo Librarian. The first mission in the Apollo manned lunar landing program, then designated AS-204, was scheduled for launch on February 21, 1967. A tragic fire during a "plugs-out" launch simulation on January 27, 1967, claimed the lives of the three astronauts aboard. NASA convened a review board to investigate the cause of the fire but the ignition source was never conclusively identified. The astronauts' deaths were attributed to various design and construction flaws in the early command module; the manned Apollo program was delayed for twenty months while these problems were corrected.Offered here are eight 8" x 10" official Manned Spacecraft Center photographs titled "AS-204 Fire," all with purple captions on the verso and all dated January 28, 1967. Four are color glossies with red numbers, as follows: S-67-21293, S-67-21294, S-67-21295, and S-67-21296. The other four are B&W glossies, as follows: S-67-19886, S-67-20065, S-67-20066, and S-67-20067. Extremely fine condition. All eight images can be viewed online.
