Description
One of only sixty-seven flown on the maiden voyage of Challenger
Space Shuttle Challenger (STS-6) Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 47F, with Notarized Presentation Letter Signed by the Crew. This 1.75" x 1.5" hexagonal sterling silver medal was one of only sixty-seven flown (of 303 minted) aboard the first flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger along with crewmembers Paul Weitz, Karol Bobko, Donald Peterson, and Story Musgrave. This mission deployed the first Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-1) into orbit and was the first Shuttle flight during which an EVA was conducted (Musgrave and Peterson). The obverse features the Shuttle and TDRS in flight, the ship's name, and the crew's surnames. The reverse also includes the crew's surnames along with the engraved information, Launched "April 4, 1983" and Landed "April 9, 1983 / RW22 Edwards AFB CA". The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. The original Robbins plastic case with numbered sticker on the bottom is included. A stunning and rare medal. Excellent.Included with this lot is a letter on NASA letterhead dated July 11, 1983, reading, in full: "It is our pleasure to present you with this Silver STS-6 Medallion #47F flown on the maiden voyage of the Challenger. The liftoff occured [sic] from Launch Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida at 13:30:00 E.S.T. on April 4,1983. The Challenger with this medallion circled the earth for 81 orbits, and landed at Edwards Air Force Base at 10:53:42 P.S.T. on April 9,1983." It is signed at the close by each crewmember in black ink and notarized on the above date.
