Description
Apollo 17 Flown Mechanical Pencil with Extra Leads Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Ron Evans. This chrome-colored Garland model 35-P mechanical pencil is 5.125" long and has a piece of Velcro wrapped around the top above the clip for ease of stowage and attachment onboard the flight. The NASA part and serial numbers "SEB 12100081 - 301" and "S/N 1050" are plainly engraved on the barrel. There are still approximately nine leads present and the pencil is functional. This pencil flew to the moon aboard the Command Module America on the last manned lunar landing mission, December 7-19, 1972. Excellent condition.Included with this lot is a small certificate of authenticity from Novaspace, signed by Janet Evans (Ron's widow) stating: "I certify that the [FLOWN on Apollo 17 Mechanical Pencil] is from the collection of my late husband, Ron Evans, Command Module Pilot of Apollo 17, the last Apollo mission to the moon in 1972. It has recently been turned over to Novaspace for dispersal to collectors of Apollo-era memorabilia." Also included is a copy of a 1973 NASA letter listing this pencil (by serial number) as an item retained by Evans after the flight.
