    Description

William Henry Harrison: Massive 1840 Campaign Pitcher, Widely regarded as One of the Premier 19th Century Ceramic Political Display Items. One really must see the scale of this huge 11.75" pitcher in person to fully appreciate its presence. We have seen several in the displays of major collectors and in every case this Harrison pitcher totally dominates the other fine ceramic pieces around it. It features four portraits, with log cabin and "The Ohio Farmer" above each, with patriotic eagle below. Harrison's portrait is surrounded by a garland with "W.H. Harrison" underneath. Manufactured by the American Pottery Company of Jersey City, this piece is coveted by political collectors and pottery collectors alike. Most political and patriotic ceramics from the 1st half of the 19th century were made in England or France for the American market, so this item by a New Jersey maker held particular significance for the Frents, who have considered it one of their favorite objects in the collection. It is likely that fewer than ten examples survive; we are aware of but three, possibly four. Heritage has handled one other example, from the renowned Scott Dolson collection, which sold for $37,500 in December 2016. Condition is generally excellent, with one minor chip/flake on the top lip, easily restored if one felt the need. (clearly the Frents did not). Looking on the inside there are several fine hairlines in the bottom, only one of which barely comes through to the glazed underside. Clearly one of the top items in the Frent collection, this offering represents an opportunity for the advanced collector of political display items which may not come again for many years.
