    Description

Van Buren & Johnson: The Very First Jugate Political Poster. This great 18" x 24" poster received full-page treatment in Running for President, 1789-1896, edited by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., and justifiably so. Beautifully engraved and published by E. Durham, New York, it features not only the jugate portraits of the 1840 Democratic candidates, but also a wonderful eagle carrying a "Liberty and Equality" banner. Below the candidates are their biographies, as well as detailed vignettes of Richard Johnson at the Battle of the Thames and the Horse Shoe. Johnson led a militia unit at the Battle of Thames and was widely credited with personally slaying the famous Indian leader Tecumseh.

To the best of our knowledge only a single copy of this poster and of the Harrison & Tyler mate have survived. Your writer sold the Harrison privately for $12,000 nearly twenty years ago.

This Van Buren & Johnson poster is in superb, near-mint condition. (For strictest accuracy, we note a little utterly inconsequential, even light toning across the top.) It must be regarded as one of the most important American political campaign posters, and one of the premier items in the Frent Collection.
