    Description

"General Grant was a very affable, courteous, and pleasant man to work upon."

    ULYSSES S. GRANT.
    Freeman Woodcock Thorp (American, 1844-1922).
    Oil on canvas.
    21" x 26" sight size. Framed to an overall 28.5" x 33.5".
Signed at lower left Thorp 1875.

A magnificent large and dignified portrait of Civil War hero and President U. S. Grant, painted from life while Grant was president. Thorp and Grant had met during the war and soon after Grant became president, Thorp was given a studio in the Capitol. Grant commissioned Thorp to paint his portrait as well as those of his family. Thorp likely painted three or more separate Grant portraits, the first sitting taking place in the Capitol Dome studio, and the rest in a room assigned for that purpose in the White House.

Thorp's comments on his subject: "Grant was a very affable, courteous, and pleasant man to work upon. He was not a great talker, but was agreeable and good-natured. One day while I was engaged with him, Horace Maynard of Tennessee who had championed the Greenback bill in Congress came in and endeavored to persuade the president to sign the measure. While still sitting for the portrait, General Grant gave Maynard as clear and concise a statement of the reasons why he proposed to veto the bill as he could have given had he taken a week's time to formulate it. The keynote of it was that the government ought to do nothing that would tend to increase or diminish the purchasing power of the dollar."

    Condition:
Minor craquelure in upper left background, otherwise excellent.
