    Description

Ulysses S. Grant: Lovely Lava Campaign Medal. Sullivan-DeWitt USG-1868-18 is 32 mm. across and is composed of some sort of lava or composition material. A matching piece was produced for running mate Colfax and it is similar to smaller medals produced for Lincoln and Douglas in 1860. The appeal of these lava medals is the color of the material and high relief, detailed portraits. The medals were molded, not struck. This specimen is brown on black and is housed in its original two-sided, presentation holder. The condition of the medal is perfect. The covers of the case are detached.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
