James Buchanan: Very Rare 1856 "Inaugural" Medal, DeWitt/Sullivan JB 1856-1. Gilded white metal, and at 60 mm diameter the largest listed Buchanan medal. The 1857 date suggests that it is an Inaugural issue, but DeWitt notes that the same engraver, Anthony Pacquet, also did a medal in this same size for Buchanan's Republican opponent, John C. Frémont. It was often the practice in the mid-19th century to date campaign items with the year the candidate would assume the presidency rather than the election year.

This is a beautiful example, nearly Uncirculated, with only very minor light rubbing on the high points. The first example we can recall handling in many years. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.
