    Description

Extremely Rare 1872 Grant & Wilson Jugate Leather "Medal". A remarkable and unique item in the annals of political memorabilia! The design is impressed deeply into both sides, the obverse bearing the nicknames "The Natick Cobbler" and "The Galena Tanner," referring to Wilson and Grant's former hometowns and former trades, both of which involved working with leather. The reverse proclaims "Grant & Wilson... There's Nothing Like Leather." Sullivan gives it full medal status, and lists it as USG 1872-1 (the largest size Grant campaign medal for that year). He also notes, "This piece was manufactured in Massachusetts in very limited numbers." Probably a leather manufacturer took the opportunity to promote the candidates as well as his product. Choice condition, the sharpest of the three examples we have seen in the past 20+ years. Diameter 39mm.
