    Description

ENGLISH CARTWHEEL GW. Albert WI-104, DeWitt GW-1789-13. This button was overstruck on an English coin sometime in the late 19th century when interest was piqued by the centennial of Washington's inauguration. The initials GW were formed with a punch. For many years, these were considered original issues, but their origin was discovered when the same punch and pattern were used on brass cut from a Chatillon spring balance scale manufactured in the last quarter of the 19th century.
