Andrew Jackson: Large 1828 Campaign Medal Featuring Jackson on Horseback. This rare medal is listed by Sullivan as a AJ-1828-7. It proclaims Jackson, "The Advocate of the American System". He notes that both Bushnell and Satterlee referred to this piece as having been 'carefully' but 'rigidly suppressed', which accounts for its rarity, but he offers no explanation. But it was most likely because it was Clay, not Jackson, who advocated a broad-based program, dubbed "the American System". This is only the second example we have handled, and the other was holed and worn. This copy is in sharp, extremely fine condition. Several minor old, small rim dings detract minimally. These large-size early campaign medals struck in soft, white metal are hard to find this clean. Diameter 38mm.
