Andrew Jackson: A Rare Large 1828 Campaign Medal Variant. White metal, 38 mm, similar to AJACK-1828-6 except that this version is dated 1828 at the bottom of the reverse rather than 1815. A rare variant, listed but not pictured in DeWitt/ Sullivan as AJACK-1828-16. Sometimes taken for an inaugural medal as the date "1829" appears under Jackson's bust; however, this is an early example of the practice of listing the year when the candidate would assume office. Struck in very soft metal, on the rare occasion when an example comes up for sale it is usually heavily worn or damaged. This one is very clean and exhibits only the lightest wear. Probably not more than several known, of which this is likely the finest. An important piece for the serious collector of early campaign tokens and medals. Pictured on page 113 in Arthur Schlesinger's Running for President: The Candidates and Their Images.
