Thomas "Tad" Lincoln: Civil War Period Ninth Plate Tintype Portrait. Ninth plate [2" x 2.5"] tintype of Tad Lincoln, seated in a studio setting, wearing a custom-made military uniform and kepi. His cheeks are tinted red and his brass buttons tinted gold. The photograph is housed in an octagonal thermoplastic case. The condition is outstanding. Tad loved to play "soldier" and was often photographed wearing a uniform. We believe this image was taken early in the war, circa 1862. It was part of an archive of artifacts that belonged to Corporal Amos Crounse (1836-1920) of the 152nd Regiment New York Infantry. He mustered in on September 6, 1862. He was wounded at Totopotomy Creek, Virginia in May 1864 leading to the amputation of his left hand and a disability discharge issued January 20, 1865. He became a government employee, working at the U. S. Capitol building, the Patent Office and the Treasury Department where he spent 42 years. We assume it was during his time at the Capitol that Crounse acquired the photograph, possibly gifted to him by the First Lady. A comparison with known images of Tad demonstrates the many striking similarities. The archive, unfortunately, was separated from the photograph, and is not available for purchase.
