Thomas Jefferson: Dinner Invitation and Envelope. 8" x 5" printed and manuscript invitation inscribed: "Th: Jefferson requests the favour of The Hon. Genl. Brown to dine with him on Wednesday the 23rd inst. at half after three, or at whatever later hour the house may rise. The favour of an answer is asked." Separated at vertical folds, repaired on verso with archival tape, two strips of linen hinging tape affixed on verso. Sold together with the original transmittal envelope addressed to the General (Robert Brown of Pennsylvania) with two strips of linen hinging tape on verso. Light "sunning" to each. A pencil inscription on the back of the envelope reads: "filled out by Meriwether Lewis", although that does not seem to be the case. Since Robert Brown served in Congress during the entire period of Jefferson's presidency and later retired to his farm in Pennsylvania, it seems very likely this is an invitation to dine at the White House.
