    Description

Thomas Jefferson: Awesome Liverpool Creamware "Chocolate" Server. In over 50 years of collecting, we have never seen another example of one of these. Without question, it is the finest piece of Jefferson china in existence. It is 6" tall with sloping sides, two handles and a series of four vent holes (nine holes per vent). A most unusual portrait of "Jefferson" appears in the middle of one side above an open shield-shaped cut-out. The other side has an American eagle with fifteen stars with Jefferson's quote below ("Peace, Commerce, and honest Friendship with all Nations Entangling Alliances with none. Anno Domini 1802"), done in color. All the designs are painted by hand. There is brown banding on the handles, rim and base. There is one small chip on the bottom, of no consequence, mentioned for accuracy only, as well as some paint loss in Jefferson's coat. We note a circular rim on the interior bottom which could accommodate a bottle or other circular receptacle. We could not locate any portrait of Jefferson which may have served as a model for this piece which, it appears, is unique and no doubt custom-made. We could also not find any examples of the same form, although it has some similarity to two-handled posset pots. A first-time offering for Heritage and a truly important artifact for one of our "Founding Fathers".
