Theodore Roosevelt: The Largest Size of the Classic "Equality" Button. When Theodore Roosevelt invited African-American Booker T. Washington to dine at the White House, he was the first President to do so. The event caused an outpouring of sentiment, both in favor and in opposition to the gesture. Several variations of this pin back button were issued in 1 1/4" to 1 3/4" sizes, this being the largest with not more than half a dozen examples still extant. Condition is outstanding, although for strictest accuracy we see a minor flaw, a ¾" horizontal shallow depression or line in the celluloid surface which runs across the TR portrait. This is visible only when the light hits the surface at the proper angle and detracts minimally, but must be noted on a button at this value level. Someone, presumably a college student, has neatly written his name and residence on the back paper. The button has high glass and displays near mint. It is perfectly centered, has bold colors with no cracks, stains or gouges. One of the most important celluloids in the Frent collection.
