Ulysses S. Grant: An Intriguing Cotton Portrait Banner. This is the Threads of History plate example (page 232). Collins speculates that it may have been made for an 1880s GAR reunion. The maker was Jos. A. Rhein, a Detroit lithographer. The other banners in this familiar style dating from the 1880s - early 1900s were by the American Flag Co. The fabric is of a tighter weave than the American flag banners, and the spacing of the blue stars and rectangular shape differ from the American Flag Co. versions, with their "swallow tail" form. The slogan "Let us have peace," was the most commonly used one in Grant's first presidential campaign of 1868. 21.75" x 28.75". The condition is very good overall, with minor light soiling and an area of vertical water staining running top to bottom as shown.
