    Description

Seymour & Blair: Fantastic Pair of Matching Greenback Flags. The Democrats were sure-losers in the 1868 presidential election, but pushed for reconciliation with the South and repayment to bondholders in greenbacks. Horatio Seymour was depicted as a Copperhead and Peace Democrat who addressed people engaged in the 1863 Draft Riots as "My friends..." We are offering a pair of rare campaign flags from that election. The first shows Seymour on a $5 greenback note. It promotes "Equal Taxation. One Currency for the Government and the People" and "Horatio Seymour for President". It measures 13" x 8" and is handsomely framed. There is a thin slice missing from the bottom stripe and some normal soiling at either extremity. Overall, it is a very fine example and worthy of any collection. In addition, we are including the matching flag for Democratic hopeful George H. Pendleton, who was McClellan's running mate in 1864. It has Pendleton's portrait on a $5 greenback and says: "Hon. Geo. H. Pendleton For President. Pendleton, The People's Nominee. Convention Ratify Their Nomination." It was obviously issued just prior to the July 4th DNC at Tammany Hall. It also measures 13" x 8" and is handsomely matted and framed. It does have scattered staining, but the colors are unusually vibrant. Given the slogan, we wonder if it was meant to promote Pendleton as the Vice Presidential nominee should he fail to win the top slot ("... ratify their nomination...").
