Millard Fillmore: Impressive Campaign Banner. Despite appealing to Nativists, Know-Nothing candidate Millard Fillmore urged fidelity to the Union ("no north, no south... but the whole country"). We offer a unique, 31" x 25 1/2" linen banner issued on behalf of Fillmore in the election of 1856. The text is printed ("For President, Millard Fillmore. For Vice-President, Andrew J. Donelson."). The eagle at the top which dominates the banner is drawn by hand in ink. His head is colored a golden orange color and he carries a riband in his beak which is inscribed: "The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved." The detail in the feathers is extraordinary, attesting to the skill of the artist. There are damp stains, as shown, and some ink burn-through that affects four of the letters in Donelson's name. There are nail holes at the four corners, indicating it may have been attached to a wooden frame and carried in a torchlight procession. The consignor's great-grandmother, Lydia Fuller Brinkerhoff, was a cousin to Mrs. Millard Fillmore and the banner has been in the same family since 1856.
