Martin Van Buren: An Exceedingly Rare and Important Embroidered Political Homespun Apron. All Van Buren display items are rare, and Collins lists but a single item: a pennant which is firmly ensconced in the Smithsonian's collection. The present item, formerly a prized item in the legendary Kenton Broyles Collection, is published in Hake's 1789-1916 volume (page 21, item 3006).

A delicate floral and vine pattern surrounds red embroidered text at each corner: "Martin Van Buren the warm and [word undecipherable] advocate for the peoples rights. October Third, 1840" and the maker's initials in one corner, and "Rich Johnson in war the safeguard in peace the [word undecipherable] of his country October Third 1840" and again the initials, "CED." The difficulty in reading the words stems from the fine intricacy of the embroidery, and not from any condition problems. In fact, but for some light overall toning, the apron is free from damage and in remarkably fine condition for display. A highly important piece of early political folk art, truly of museum quality. Measures 26" x 31.5".
