LARGE QUILTED COVERLET WITH C. 1790 WASHINGTON AND FRANKLIN CLOTH. Large 70 x 72" complete coverlet, one side done in the repeat pattern known as "The Apotheosis of Franklin." It is listed in Threads of History (p. 8) as c. 1785, but that dating is clearly in error, as Franklin died in 1790. But what makes this particular cloth so interesting to collectors is the George Washington image, in uniform, driving a chariot. Textiles picturing Washington dating from while Washington was still alive are scarce and valuable. This coverlet presents five complete images of Franklin and three of George Washington. Franklin holds up a banner with the quote, "Where Liberty Dwells, There is My Country." A plaque on the side of Washington’s chariot reads "American Independence 1776." Various other patriotic and military motifs. Condition is very nice, with no noteworthy defects. Light perimeter and corner "aging" does not have a negative impact, but rather adds a sense of age and character. We had not seen a piece of this cloth on the market for many years, until there was a "find" of about 15 repeats four or five years ago. The owner set a price of $4000 each, acknowledging the find and how many he had, and still sold most fairly quickly a that price. This coverlet is a completely different entity, have nothing to do with that find. A very desirable item, just the right size for wall display. (# This item may require additional shipping charges).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
