Horace Greeley: A Fabulous Red, White, and Blue Campaign Banner for this 1872 Presidential Candidate. Albumen portrait of Greeley in the center, surrounded by red, white, and blue text contained in a gold border. Suspended from the original wood dowel with finials at each end. Marked at the bottom: "Scheible Maker 49 South 3rd. St Phila." 11.25" x 15.25".

This was one of the cover pieces in the 1998-2000 series of auctions of the U. I. "Chick" Harris Collection by Slater's Americana, and was absolutely Chick's favorite piece in that legendary collection. Although it is a manufactured object, not hand-made, we have never seen or heard of another example. It was one of the most expensive items in the Harris Collection, selling for $26,565 in the May, 1999 auction. When offered in the Harris auction the banner had suffered from some soiling and waterstaining. Its subsequent owner took the not-inconsiderable gamble of having it cleaned by a top conservator. The result is a much brighter and more vibrant banner with terrific display appeal! It has been elegantly mounted in a shadow box-type custom frame.

Horace Greeley items have always held special appeal for political collectors. Perhaps this is because of his amazing career in journalism, his untimely death just after the 1872 election, his immortal advice to the youth of America to "Go West," or perhaps just the limited variety and rarity of Greeley campaign collectibles. When it comes to display items for this tough candidate, precious little is available. Indeed, this very banner is the only Greeley campaign textile listed in Threads of History. Several Greeley portrait flags are known, one of which was sold privately by the writer for $70,000 - some ten years ago. Only a half dozen Greeley campaign ribbons of several different designs are known, and they are valued in a range from $7500 to $20,000 each.

Some critics lament the "small" size of this banner, but it is in fact roughly the same size as many political campaign flags which have changed hands at prices well into five figures. To our taste, this literally unique Greeley banner belongs on anyone's list of the top five items in the pantheon of political collectibles. Having handled its only previous appearance at auction, we are honored to have the opportunity to offer it for the second time.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
