    Description

Henry Clay: An Outstanding Example of the Rare and Iconic 1844 "Ship of State" Silk Campaign Flag. Below the storm-tossed vessel is the sentiment:

"She will founder unless with true patriot zeal
We get rid of the lubber who stands at the wheel.
We'll take a new pilot whose heart is true blue
And such shall we find in our Harry the true."

Collins pictures a specimen from an institutional collection on p. 118 of Threads of History, but we cannot recall ever seeing an example of this wonderful design offered for sale. Arguably the most desirable Clay flag variety, and without question one of the top flags in the Frent Collection. 29" x 23.5", and in excellent overall condition with strong colors. Two trivial small internal tears are noted for strictest accuracy, but do not detract. There is some subtle bleed-through of the lettering on the red stripes, apparently the result of the flag becoming moist while folded up. As the photo demonstrates, this flag has fine display presence, and offers a very special opportunity for the advanced specialist in political textiles.
From the Collection of David and Janice Frent
