Henry Clay: 1844 Homemade Parade Banner. 38" x 33" linen banner with hand-painted lettering, inscribed: "Clay. Frelinghuysen. Union & Protection. Vs. Polk, Dallas, Texas, Free Trade & Disunion." The issue of the admission of Texas as a slave state, through annexation or other means, was one that three-time Presidential candidate Henry Clay sought to avoid. Polk, on the other hand, favored annexation and was an advocate of slavery. While Polk, the dark horse, got elected, the Whig's prediction that the extension of slavery would bring about disunion proved most prescient. Some loss along right side, as shown. Some letters have partially lifted or are peeling, due to the corrosive effect of the iron oxide/ox gall ink. We recommend it be tacked down to a canvas stretcher and framed under glass, for preservation and stability. Though delicate, it remains a most historical artifact.
