    Description

Greeley & Brown: A Fantastic Miniature Cloth Campaign Flag for the Sought-After Ticket. Clearly a campaign novelty, it is accompanied by a 5" x 8" certificate which declares, "The Flag may be attached to the clothing at the top and bottom of the staff." The wood for the flag "pole" is from Greeley's farm at Chappaqua, NY. The certificate also declares that "The Chappaqua Flags...are recommended by the National Committee of Liberal Republican," dated July 29, 1872.

While this is clearly one of the best Greeley campaign badges, its greatest importance may be as a bonafide Greeley campaign flag, despite its diminutive (2" x 1.5") size. Horace Greeley flags are among the rarest in the genre. We know of only three portrait flags, and we have heard of-but never seen-a name flag. Your writer sold one of the portrait flags more than a decade ago for a price in excess of $60,000! Along with the accompanying ribbon offered in the adjacent lot, this is an opportunity for the serious collector which may never come again. From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
