George Washington: Rare Memorial Bandanna. Washington's passing was marked on a handful of textiles of which this example, "Tears of America", ranks high on the list of desirability. It measures 21.5" x 19.5" and is listed in "Threads of History" as #19. The central "tableaux" shows two female figures mourning at a representation of Washington's tomb, with urn and obelisk. Six captions relate to the situation and include comments by the Senator, Citizen, Soldier and Sailor. The top and bottom have sentiments of a religious nature dealing with man's mortality. In the upper left-hand corner, the initials "J Mc A S" (James McAlpin Sommerville) have been embroidered in pale blue thread. The bandanna has been mounted to a board and is remarkably well-preserved.
