    Description

George Washington: An Extremely Rare Contemporary Bordered Bandana. This large cotton bandana, circa late 1790s, depicts Washington addressing the congress, giving his famous Farewell Address. The title at the top reads 'Washington addressing the people of the United States of American on his resignation from the presidency", and the central image is surrounded by the text of that speech. We have never encountered this particular variety before, and consider it vastly more important than the several more familiar varieties of similar-appearing textiles mourning Washington's death.

This textile has never had the benefit of professional conservation and such attention would greatly improve its display appearance, which is basically sound. The background has typically aged to an even beige tone, and the red printing has faded evenly somewhat, but not to a serious degree. There is a surprising lack of significant soiling or staining, although scattered light indications of "aging" are present. The bandana still has the fold lines from some two centuries of storage in a folded form, and a professional pressing would make it much easier to appreciate the design and appearance. There are two minor holes, one at the upper left hand corner, and one near the right edge toward the bottom. There is a somewhat larger hole near the center. Fortunately it is not on any significant design element, but rather an area of the backdrop behind Washington's figure. Professional re-backing with a color consistent with the overall beige tones would render this hole hardly noticeable. While certainly display-worthy in its present state, this significant early Washington textile deserves to find a buyer who will bring out its full display potential. Dimensions: 24" x 22".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
