Frémont & Dayton: A Wonderful Large 1856 Campaign Flag For the First Republican Presidential Ticket. While Lincoln was the first Republican to be elected, the party was actually formed in 1856 out of the Free Soil Movement, and their first standard-bearer was the staunch abolitionist and legendary "Pathfinder" John C. Fremont. Perhaps due to the turbulence that followed, a particularly small number of campaign flags of the 1850s seem to have survived, and we estimate not more than half a dozen examples for this ticket. This is a variety we have not encountered previously, and an especially attractive one due to the outlining of the letters to create an almost three-dimensional effect. The blues and reds are extremely strong and deep, as nice as we have seen on a flag of this era. Minor light soiling detracts minimally as does one small tear at the lower left-hand corner. 35" x 24".

Among the various categories of political display items, these colorful flags, found from the elections of 1840 through the late 19th century, are among the most highly prized by seasoned collectors. The present example is one the finest of this genre that we have been privileged to offer.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
