    Description

Clay & Frelinghuysen: A Very Rare Variety of 1844 Silk Campaign Flag Banner. This delightful design features the Ship of State, with this poetic text below: "She Will Founder Unless With True Patriot Zeal We Get Rid of the Lubber Who Stands at the Wheel; We'll Take a New Pilot Whose Heart is True Blue, and Such Shall We Find in Our Harry the True." The Threads plate example is ensconced in the collection of the Chester County Historical Society, and this is the only other example we have ever encountered. The central portion appears to be in black ink on the Chester County example, whereas the center here in a tan shade with weaker contrast. Very strong reds and blues. Two small stain marks in center, otherwise exceptionally clean condition. Obvious loss at lower right-hand corner. Still a very historic and displayable flag. 29" x 23.5".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
