Abraham Lincoln: Large Parade Flag. Perhaps nothing is more evocative of 19th century elections than the paraphernalia associated with torchlight processions. Within this collecting genre, Lincoln parade flags are highly-prized possessions. We offer a 26" x 16" cotton flag inscribed: "For President,/ Abram Lincoln/ Vice President,/ Hannibal Hamlin". In keeping with broadside-style design, there are four different type fonts used. We count 35 stars. This exceeds the number of states in the Union in 1860. The 35th state, West Virginia, entered the Union on June 20, 1863. Given the unquestionable originality of the piece, we can only assume that this piece was produced in 1864, prior to the National Union Party convention held in Baltimore, in the anticipation, widely-shared, that Hannibal Hamlin would be re-nominated for a second term. In fact, Hamlin was a main contender in the balloting held in Baltimore, but lost out to War Democrat Andrew Johnson, of Tennessee. The flag has a few holes, light staining along the left edge, soiling in the right third and loss to the upper right corner, resulting in loss to the the letter "T" on the first line and to half of the last "N" in "Lincoln". It has been discreetly pinned to a fabric-covered board and is ready for framing and display.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
