    Description

Owned by the Great Compromiser Himself.

[Henry Clay]: Fantastic 1844 Native American Campaign Flag. 29" x 52" (including hoist/sleeve) cotton flag, inscribed "Native. Americans. Beware of Foreign. Influence". The canton depicts a sunburst, eagle, shield, flags and ballot box with the same inscription. The format and design in the canton matches similar flags issued for Polk and Clay in the election of 1844. The Native American Party or Nativists were a strong political constituency, centered in Philadelphia, which arose around 1844. They were anti-Irish, anti-German and anti-Catholic. They advocated limitations on immigration and urged a 21-year waiting period before an immigrant could become a naturalized U.S. citizen and vote in national elections. They rioted in Philadelphia and burned churches frequented by the immigrant population. In the election of 1844, they backed Henry Clay for the Presidency. Later on, they became the American or Know-Nothing Party and recruited President Millard Fillmore as one of their adherents. This imposing artifact comes with a typed note indicating it was the property of Henry Clay himself and displayed "on the outer walls of his residence". It was gifted to a family friend, Brooklyn Mayor Conklin Brush. Some of Mayor Brush's collection was given to the Long Island Historical Society and the balance to his grandson, Herbert Brush, who gave it to the writer of the note. There are a few minor stains and three delicate repairs along the left side ("... you will note how carefully the women of the family took care of it by the stitches they put in the corner to keep it intact..."). The colors are very strong and there are no tears or pulls. We can recall but one other auction appearance in the last fifty years. An exceptional piece of political Americana.
