U.S. Presidents Up Through Taft: An Unusual Embroidered Patchwork Quilt. The general format is a familiar one, picturing the presidents up through the incumbent at the time it was made (indeed, a more typical example up through Harding is also included in this auction). But this is an unusual and complex variant. Generally the portraits are embroidered onto a single sheet of fabric, but in this case each portrait square and the red divisions are all individual pieces of cloth sewn together as a patchwork. In addition to the presidents, it depicts various subjects, including historical ones (the Liberty Bell, Fulton's steamboat The Claremont) and images from popular culture (Buster Brown and Tige). In totality, this is the most impressive example of this genre we have ever seen. The back is unfinished as is often the case. Condition is excellent but for a little bit of trivial staining noted strictly for accuracy. 80" x 81".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
