Great McKinley & Hobart "National Wheelmen" Flag on Original Stick. Bicycling was a national craze in 1896, and there were a number of cyclist's political action groups. Presumably because this was an avocation for the more affluent, they seem to have been overwhelmingly pro-Republican.

Political flags are of course highly prized by collectors, and one with this association is especially nice. Condition is basically excellent, with minimal fading and no damage of consequence. However, whether due to wear or uneven stencilling, there is an overall unevenness to the lettering, which, as the photo shows, is really not offensive. However, a previous owner decided to try to "enhance" the lettering in some weak spots, and added black pigment which is darker and denser than the surrounding original pigment. This is really a minor distraction unless one is examining the item with that in mind, but it must be noted and taken into account in valuing the item. The flag is 12" x 17.5", and the original stick is 27" in length. A rare and desirable political flag.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
