Given to White House First Maid Lillian Rogers Parks by First Lady Bess Truman when the White House was going through remodeling, when various things were given away.  Parks states that this bust "was used by several presidents for display in the White House."  She had been at the White House, both in an official capacity and earlier assisting her mother, Maggie Rogers; so she was certainly in a position to attest to its having been around the White House for some time.  However, it may well have been there even longer than she realized, as this type of parian bust was most popular in the last quarter of the 19th century.

It is very large for the type (height 11"), and formed of separate pedestal and bust, which are bolted together on the inside.  Condition is beautiful;  this piece has great display presence.  Provenance is established by a 1983 note from Parks, on card with the Presidential Seal and "The White House, Washington" (see photo).
