Stephen A. Douglas: Ultra Rare and Desirable Parade Flag. 22" x 13 1/2" cotton flag inscribed "Douglas & Johnson." on the 3rd, 5th and 7th white stripes. There are thirty-four stars (anticipating the admission of Kansas) in two circles... an unusual pattern in itself. There is some light fading, soiling and loss to the upper right corner. There are three nail holes in the hoist where it was attached to a stick. It is attractively matted and framed. Douglas name flags are rarer than Douglas portrait flags. An example similar to this, perhaps the very same one, was part of the famous Richard Withington auction of political flags that took place in Hillsborough, New Hampshire around 30 years ago. That sale had multiple examples of Lincoln and Bell flags, excised from quilts, as well as one Clay flag and one Douglas flag. This is an impressive display item for the "Champion of Popular Sovereignty" and Lincoln's arch rival.
