    Description

Stephen A. Douglas: Currier & Ives Cartoon. Medium folio [18" x 13 1/2"] lithograph published by Currier & Ives in 1860, titled "'Taking the Stump' or Stephen in Search of His Mother." It is based on a trip Douglas took to his hometown in Vermont, ostensibly to visit his mother, but which turned out to be a thinly-veiled campaign trip which generated ridicule. The cartoon features all four presidential candidates that year and seems to favor Lincoln who rests against a split-rail fence and exclaims "Go it, ye cripples! wooden legs are cheap, but stumping won't save you." Mounted to board with scattered foxing. Selections from the Collection of Tom Charles Huston.
