Printed 8 x 6 1/2" form declares that "Mr. Peter Cardelli, Sculptor-From Rome... Has received the special favor of their Excellencies James Monroe, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson, to execute their busts from life...and sell them."  The price for each bust was $15, a substantial sum in those days!  It was the custom for salesmen in those days to actually have the customer sign the order form, and provide their "Place of Residence." Ordering and signing are three famous and important figures from early American history: 1)John Trumbull (famed painter of Revolutionary War subjects 2) DeWitt Clinton (governor of NY at the time, and subsequently an unsuccessful candidate for the presidency) 3) Stephen Van Rensselaer (wealthy, prominent New Yorker who served on the Erie Canal Commission, in the U.S. House of Representatives, and founded what became Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), and Charles Dexter of Boston.  Minor light water stain detracts minimally, otherwise Excellent condition, in a 19th century frame.  Clinton and Van Rensselaer ordered only the bust of Jefferson, perhaps an informal "straw poll" on the status of the three Founding Fathers as of 1819! A remarkable piece of Americana.  Please note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, additional shipping costs may apply.
