Mary Todd Lincoln: Telegram to Son Robert. Sometime in August 1861, the First Lady used the offices of the "United States Military Telegraph" to send a telegram to her son Robert, then staying at the Metropolitan Hotel in New York City. The message was likely dictated by Mrs. Lincoln to a clerk who wrote it out on the prescribed form: "To Robert Lincoln/ Metropolitan Hotel/ N.Y./ I will be there/ Wednesday/ evening./ Mrs. Lincoln." There are two annotations: "Rec. 205 PM" and "6/Chg State Sept". Around this time, Mary and Robert Todd Lincoln, together with John Hay and Elizabeth Grimsley, traveled to Long Branch, New Jersey and thence to Manhattan. It was during this trip to Gotham that Mary Todd Lincoln visited Haughwout's emporium on the northeast corner of Broadway & Broome (still standing!) and spent $3,195 on dining service for the White House. She was the original shopaholic!

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
