John Quincy Adams: Invitation to Ball Honoring Opponent Andrew Jackson. 5" x 8" printed and manuscript invitation on bifolium stationery reading: "Mr. and Mrs. Adams request the favor of Mr. Lawrence's Company, on Thursday Evening, the 8th of January, 1824. 22d December, 1823." Water mark of "J. Whatman Turkey Mill 1822". Addressed on verso to: "Mr. Lawrence of New York H.R." Adams was Secretary of State at the time of this invitation. The party was held in honor of the 9th anniversary of Andrew Jackson's victory at New Orleans. Jackson attended, but President and Mrs. Monroe did not. Jackson left early to attend another party in his honor. Adams and Jackson were candidates for the Presidency in 1824. There was some talk of an Adams-Jackson ticket that year. So, the two were probably in good spirits when they met face-to-face at this Washington, D.C. social event. After the "Corrupt Bargain" of 1824, they became strident opponents and you can be sure Jackson's name was stricken from the list of party guests to avoid any unpleasantness.
