Horace Greeley: Two Examples of Negative Campaigning. Here are two anti-Greeley imprints issued during his failed run for the White House, an effort that culminated with his losing his job, his wife's death, commitment to an asylum and his own death. The first is a 16-page booklet titled: "Salt River Guide for Disappointed Politicians." It measures 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" and was published by Winchell, Small & Company of New York. It is full of anti-Greeley cartoons, including a particularly vicious one on the back cover showing a dead Greeley crushed by an organ ("Death of the Old Organist and Ruin of His Organ. The Result of Playing Unpopular Tunes.") This is disbound and in excellent condition. The other title is: "The Meritorious Man. Who Is He? Horace Rosinante Greeley..." It is 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" in purple, pictorial wraps. It is 48 pages, published by James & Webb of Wilmington, Delaware. It is full of pro-Grant and anti-Greeley cartoons. There is some loss to the front cover and it lacks the back cover. The contents are excellent.
