    Description

Henry Clay: The Rising Sun of Kentucky Cartoon. E. W. Clay was, not surprisingly, a Henry Clay supporter and drew this 17" x 12" cartoon, lithographed by Willis & Probst of New York in 1843. It is titled: "Impure Spirits Disappearing Before the Rising Sun." A sailor, farmer and workman all celebrate the appearance of sun-like Henry Clay, bringing "... a glimpse of sunshine at last!" Webster, sensing he can't get the nomination, has gone fishing. Six demonic creatures of the nether world (Van Buren, Tyler, Calhoun and others) depart the scene. Tyler exclaims: "I wilfully deserted the light and now get my reward and sink into oblivion." It has some professional restoration to border tears and displays very nicely.
