Henry Clay: Terrific 1844 Cartoon. All the major players of American politics at the time are depicted on this 17.5" x 13" cartoon published in New York by Willis & Probst. It is titled: "The Polka, A New National Dance Adopted by the Democratic Convention at Baltimore, May 29th 1844." Jackson and Van Buren are the musicians. The dancers include Polk & Dallas, Cass, Richard Johnson, Tyler and Calhoun. Jackson compliments Van Buren by saying "By the Eternal, Matty, you beat Ole Bull!" Tyler tells Calhoun "How do you like this sort of thing John? This is what I call my Texas movement!" Clay & Frelinghuysen are bystanders who predict the dancers will fail to execute the difficult steps and break down. This is a lot better than "Dancing with the Stars!"

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
