Hancock & English: Jugate Street Banner Advertisement. M. R. Levy was a maker of "Open Work Political Banners" in the 19th century. This is an example of one of his brochures from 1880. It is framed in the open position to display a Hancock & English fish-net banner. These banners were strung across streets and were humongous. We recall several years ago attending a Sullivan County, New York auction that had one of these (the central painted portraits, netting and one partial strip of text). The buyer had second thoughts later on (perhaps goaded by his wife) and resold it at auction. We believe that example, plus a Harrison & Reid example in the DeWitt Collection, are the only street banners from this period still extant. These type of banners were made from 1868 to 1932. This advertisement has some light stains, as shown.
