George Washington: An Important Revolutionary War Letter with Military Subject Matter. Letter signed, 1 page, 8" x 12.75". Undated, but known to have been written August 2nd, 1778. The body of the letter is in the hand of his aide Robert Hanson Harrison, and was written to Massachusetts Council President Jeremiah D. Powell. Washington requests the Massachusetts Militia to join and support the Continental Brigade commanded by John Glover. Glover's force was detached from the main force at White Plains and sent to Rhode Island to eventually participate in the Battle of Quaker Hill, also known as the Battle of Rhode Island. On August 29th, 1778, Glover's force joined Varnum's brigade, both of which were under the command of the Marquis de Lafayette. This was one of the first attempts at active collaboration between the Americans and the French. It resulted in defeat when the supporting French naval force was scattered by a hurricane and forced to sail to Boston Harbor for repairs.

The letter displays beautifully, with large, bold Washington signature. Light age toning, minor glassine remnants at top margin, loss at top right filled in on verso, horizontal fold separation professionally repaired with archival tape, a repair undetectable from the front. Overall a very pleasing appearance.
