Franklin Pierce: Anti-Pierce Cartoon. The 1852 Democratic nominee is ridiculed in this 18.5" x 13" cartoon published by Yankee Notions Magazine and lithographed by T. R. Strong, both of New York. It was apparently issued prior to Pierce's nomination. The left half shows a "Scene in a New Hampshire Court. General Pierce Examining a Witness." The witness makes everyone laugh when he alludes to the episode in the Mexican War when Pierce fainted. The right half shows a "Scene in a New Hampshire Village. Pierce the Good Samaritan." Pierce gives a boy a penny to buy a stick of candy and says: "... remember to vote for Pierce, if ever he is nominated for President." It has a 2" and a 3/4" border tear and is in excellent condition overall.
