    Description

FINE POLITICAL LETTER SIGNED BY TOUGH CANDIDATE LEWIS CASS, DATED FROM THE 1848 ELECTION YEAR. In this letter, written from Washington on June 4, 1848, Cass thanks a supporter from Lancaster, Pennsylvania for his "kind letter and for the manifestation of good feelings toward me which it contains". Apparently the writer had asked Cass to make a political visit there, but circumstances force him to decline the invitation. 7 1/2" x 9 3/4", nicely double-matted with an 1862-dated, color-tinted portrait engraving. Cass is one of the true "forgotten men" of American politics. His long career of public service included the ranks of military general, governor and Secretary of State! But few items survive from his 1848 presidential defeat to Zachary Taylor, making this election-year letter an especially nice acquisition for the political collector.
