    Description

Election of 1824: Political Cartoon Depicting Five Candidates. This 10" x 9" engraved cartoon depicts "The five aspirants" for the presidential chair in the election of 1824. Although Andrew Jackson received the most votes, he failed to attain a majority, forcing the election into the House of Representatives, where the "corrupt bargain" between Clay and Adams resulted in Adams' selection. The contest actually involved just four contenders: William Crawford, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and Andrew Jackson. In this rendition, a diverse and large group of politicians attempt to gain attention and public acceptance. Jackson stands on the "New Orleans Seminole War" pedestal. Adams faces the presidential chair, standing on the "South American Independence Treaty of Ghent" pedestal. An unidentified politician, perhaps Daniel Webster, supported by pumpkins and fish, stands on a barrel labeled "Molasses 1st Quality. Weights & Measures". Clay, under the label "Political Consistency" ascends the ladder of success, carrying the banner inscribed "Domestic Manufacture. Internal Improvements. Navy. U. S. Bank. Fortifications." The intriguers appear on the right. A young Martin Van Buren appears with William Crawford standing on his head, declaring "Caucus - Caucus - Caucus!" Presidential candidates at this time were chosen by Congressional caucuses. Crawford had been nominated in this manner in February 1824, despite having suffered a debilitating stroke. The other candidates boycotted this meeting. National nominating conventions did not appear until 1832 and, even then, met with stiff opposition, especially from members of the Whig Party. There is scattered loss and a horizontal tear along the right side, as shown. The item could easily be restored for a modest amount of money and certainly merits it, considering its rarity and historical importance.
