Daniel Webster: Evocative Fugitive Slave Law Cartoon. This 19" x 13" lithographed cartoon represents various issues related to the Compromise of 1850 and the Presidential campaign of 1852. It is titled: "A grand Slave hunt, or Trial of Speed for the Presidency, between the celebrated nags Black Dan, Lewis Cass, and Haynau." We can identify the three individuals mentioned in the title, as well as Henry Clay, Millard Fillmore and Horace Mann. Fillmore, holding the Fugitive Slave Bill, says: "I do not blight beneficent legislation by vetoes." Clay says: "We southern gentlemen leave the details of this business to our Haynau's and northern apostates." Mann decries the loss of the 8th Congressional district race for Congress. Webster says: "This is slightly inconvenient, but it is the best run I ever made for the Presidency." Save for two minor border tears, the condition is excellent. Clay also supported the Compromise of 1850, but was not seen as a turncoat like Webster. It is signed "T.C."
