Abraham Lincoln: Unique and Important Ticket to the "Cooper Union" Speech.
3.25" x 2" thin card stock ticket inscribed "Hon. Abraham Lincoln, Cooper Institute, Monday Evening, Feb. 27th, 1860. Tickets, Twenty-Five Cents." Blank verso. Faint vertical crease. The Young Men's Republican Club of New York issued invitations to Cassius Clay and Abraham Lincoln to give speeches at the Cooper Institute. Lincoln gave his speech before a standing-room only crowd of 1500 spectators. Advance tickets were advertised in the local newspapers at a cost of 25-cents apiece. The speech was very well-received, generating a great deal of press coverage. Several editions in pamphlet form were published in its wake. The notoriety gained helped put Lincoln "on the map" and positioned him as a player in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Despite the passing of 140 years, no examples of this ticket surfaced in the marketplace, nor were any copies known to exist in institutional holdings. Tickets for other "Cooper Union" lectures by noted abolitionists (Henry Ward Beecher and Charles Sumner) did exist. but the chance discovery of this piece in a Louisville, Kentucky antique shop by Charlie McSorley came as a total shock to the collecting fraternity. Since that time, no other examples have surfaced, making this a unique artifact in the Lincoln "saga". Apparently, few people at the time realized the importance of the event. Accordingly, all tickets save one were discarded.
