Abraham Lincoln: The Photographer's Personal Copy of His Portrait. Salt print (O-16) taken by Samuel M. Fassett in Chicago on October 4, 1859. The negative was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This 5 1/4" x 7" photograph is affixed to a paper mount and inscribed at the bottom "Abraham Lincoln". The wooden backboard is inscribed in pencil: "Property of Samuel M. Fassett personal [copy]". It is housed in an oval, wooden frame. The glass is cut squarely and is loose in the frame. The mount is lightly soiled with some wrinkling on the left side and a few areas of abrasions, as shown. It has a good deal of character. The glass is likely the original, although it should probably be replaced or refitted. We have no reason to doubt the provenance. This image was used on both campaign ferrotypes and ribbons in the election of 1860 and was Mary Todd Lincoln's favorite portrait of her husband.
